For their dominant performance, the team will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/0\/football\/30562216\">collect $2 million from FIFA<\/a>, the international body that runs the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The championship prize for women pales in comparison to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/12\/05\/us-soccer-world-prizemoney-idUSBRE9B40QG20131205\">$8 million in prize money<\/a> awarded to men\u2019s teams who lose in the first round. Every men\u2019s team was awarded $1.5 million just for participating<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>FIFA, which generates billions in revenue, also forced women \u2014 but not the men \u2014 to play this year\u2019s World Cup <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/sports\/2015\/06\/08\/3667111\/concerns-mount-artificial-turf-hits-120-degrees-womens-world-cup\/\">on artificial turf<\/a>. This not only increased the risk of injury, but also increased temperatures on the field by 20-30 degrees. During tournament, field temperatures <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/sports\/2015\/06\/08\/3667111\/concerns-mount-artificial-turf-hits-120-degrees-womens-world-cup\/\">reached 120 degrees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of top players filed a <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/sports\/2014\/10\/01\/3574803\/womens-soccer-players-file-gender-discrimination-lawsuit-against-fifa-canadian-soccer-association\/\">gender discrimination lawsuit against FIFA<\/a> in Canadian court, citing the artificial turf issue. The case was dropped when it became clear FIFA would not change the field surface <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/soccer\/2015\/01\/21\/womens-world-cup-artificial-turf-lawsuit\/22111983\/\">even if they lost<\/a>. FIFA did agree to play the 2019 women\u2019s World Cup on grass.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. women\u2019s team has won the World Cup three times.
